URL shortening is a technique on the World Wide Web in which a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) may be made substantially shorter and still direct to the required page. This is achieved by using a redirect which links to the web page that has a long URL. For example, the URL "http://www.somehost.com/somedirectory/somepage.html" can be shortened to "https://ux5.de/sdj3". The redirect url is much shorter than the original one.
Most URL shortner services provide a public API to make it easy for integration into webservices and apps. At ux5.de we do not provide a public API to avoid spam. If you need a url shortner API please check URL shortening wiki page for a url shortener service with API.
